Since 1946, East Penn has been producing high quality batteries and battery accessories for the automotive, commercial, marine, industrial, standby power and speciality markets.

Facilities at its 520-acre single-site manufacturing complex in Lyon Station, PA include four automotive battery plants, an industrial battery plant, a speciality battery plant, a state-of-the-art oxide facility, an innovative recycling infrastructure, and dozens of vertically integrated capabilities and other support facilities. Just kilometres away from the main plant, East Penn owns and operates a wire, cable and battery accessory plant and a multiple facility distribution centre. An additional manufacturing facility in Corydon, Iowa helps accommodate widespread growth.

AGM technology

AGM batteries can be substituted in virtually any lead battery application (in conjunction with well-regulated charging).  They are a type of valve regulated lead (VRLA) battery, which uses a one way pressure relief valve system to achieve a “recombinant technology” that never needs watering and should never be opened.

What is AGM technology?:

AGM is an acronym for absorbed glass mat.  The battery’s electrolyte is fully absorbed in a matted glass fibres, creating a spill-proof, leak-proof battery design that doesn’t leak acid like flooded batteries will if tipped on their side.  The glass fibres also enable a lower electrical resistance, which optimizes current flow plates for a more efficient transfer of power.close up of absorbed glass mat technolgy with terminal

The glass mats in AGM batteries are wrapped around the positive battery plates, which helps prevent damage from vibration and extend cycling. The battery’s plates are packed tightly in the case partitions, providing further vibration protection. AGM battery designs can have over twice the cycle life of a conventional flooded product in the right application. They also offer many times the vibration resistance of conventional flooded batteries.

Gel batteries are classified as a valve regulated lead (VRLA) battery, which uses a one way pressure relief valve system to achieve a “recombinant technology” that never needs watering and should never be opened.

What is Gel technology?:

The electrolyte in a Gel battery is permanently locked in a highly viscous gelled state instead of the traditional liquid form. Because there is no liquid-type electrolyte, it will not leak out of the battery if tipped on its side. The thick, gelled electrolyte and tightly packed plates also protect the battery’s power producing components.
