Circular Economy

East Penn Manufacturing’s computer-controlled, closed-loop system, co-located with its manufacturing facilities, recycles virtually 100% of each used battery received for processing. Our innovative secondary lead smelter and refinery processes an average of 30,000 batteries per day for recycling.

Here’s how it works:

  • Manufacturing: Leveraging recycled materials, we manufacture premium lead batteries.
  • Use: Our customers rely on our high-performance batteries for various applications, including transportation, material handling, backup power and more.
  • Collection: Once the batteries reach the end of their life, we pick up the used batteries.
  • Recycling: We reclaim primary materials through our award-winning closed-loop recycling method to be used in the manufacture of new lead batteries.

Green Initiatives

East Penn aims to integrate eco-friendly initiatives into every step of the battery manufacturing process.

Key features:

  • About 82% of all lead used in the manufacturing of new East Penn batteries is from recycled lead
  • Battery cases and cells are ground and processed into polypropylene pellets to be moulded into new parts and cases
  • East Penn scientists have invented a patented process that reclaims sulfuric acid from used batteries
  • Excess heat is redirected to warm adjacent manufacturing facilities in the winter
  • Sulfur fumes generated during the smelting process are captured and reprocessed into a liquid nitrogen sulfur solution, which is used to make fertilizer
  • Our highly efficient smelting facility provides lead required in the manufacture of our products*

*Excluding Deka Unigy batteries, which are manufactured from virgin lead.
